The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for the Postdoctoral Associate/Senior Postdoctoral position. The title/rank will be contingent upon the selected candidate's skills and experience in their area of expertise.

Postdoctoral Associate:

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in hand by September, 2023.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, Physics, or a closely related field. Strong coding skills. Knowledge of large-scale climate variability and tropics-extratropics teleconnections. Experience with machine learning models. Experience with statistical/mathematical analysis and visualization. Experience handling large observational or forecast datasets.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences under the supervision of Principal Investigator, Dr. Hyemi Kim. The goal of this project is to develop a deep-learning hybrid dynamical-statistical model for implementation at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center (CPC) in support of post-processing subseasonal products to improve forecasting of US precipitation. The successful candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, with an exceptional attention to detail.

Postdoctoral Associate duties will include:

  • Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conduct data analysis using large-ensemble climate models and forecasts.
  • Develop a deep learning hybrid forecasting model.
  • Participate and assist in the preparation, writing, and publication of scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Other duties as assigned


Senior Postdoctoral Associate:

Knowledge of large-scale climate variability and tropics-extratropics teleconnections. Experience with machine learning models. Experience with statistical/mathematical analysis and visualization. The Senior Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences under the supervision of Principal Investigator, under the supervision of Principal Investigator, Dr. Hyemi Kim. The goal of this project is to develop a deep-learning hybrid dynamical-statistical model for implementation at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center (CPC) in support of post-processing subseasonal products to improve forecasting of US precipitation. The successful candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, with an exceptional attention to detail. The incumbent is expected to co-lead the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, the candidate is expected to contribute to the writing of science proposals and their submission to federal agencies.

Senior Postdoctoral Associate duties will include:

  • Conduct data analysis using large-ensemble climate models and forecasts.
  • Develop a deep learning hybrid forecasting model.
  • Lead the preparation, writing and publication of scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals
  • Assist in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
