Departmental Overview

The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is composed of diverse researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of California, Davis. Together, our scientists have powerful combined expertise. They conduct world-class research, driven by the real possibility of using genome engineering to treat human diseases, end hunger, and respond to climate change.

Position Summary

The Staff Scientist (Staff Research Associate 4) will join a research group focused on investigating microbial biology, molecular biology, and executing high-throughput DNA sequencing experiments. Responsible for leading the execution of research projects or major portions thereof, contributing original ideas of major methodological significance. Lead a new area of research within the lab, and supervise junior researchers, associates, and undergraduates.

Responsibilities

Project Leadership and Execution:

  • Direct and take charge of the execution of complex research projects, including the development of original methodologies for the precise manipulation of microbial communities.
  • Plan, design, and independently conduct experiments, drawing upon extensive knowledge of microbial biology, molecular genetics, and high-throughput DNA sequencing.
  • Responsible for research initiatives in developing advanced genetic manipulation tools for microbial communities using cutting-edge techniques such as CRISPR/Cas- and CAST-based systems.
  • The focus will be on creating innovative methodologies for precise editing and functional studies of diverse microbial species.
  • Analyze data, interpret results, and contribute to the advancement of research goals, making significant original contributions.


Method Development and Innovation:

  • Contribute original ideas and develop innovative methodologies of major significance in microbial biology and molecular genetics.
  • Standardize and refine new techniques and adapt them for use by the research team.
  • Collaborate with computational biologists to analyze large-scale genomic datasets, identifying key molecules and pathways involved in microbial processes and interactions with other microbiome members.


Mentorship and Team Leadership:

  • Lead a small team, including junior researchers, associates, and undergraduates.
  • Provide guidance, set research priorities, and oversee project timelines.
  • Mentor junior staff and facilitate a collaborative and productive work environment


Training and Development:

  • Provide comprehensive training for new lab members in advanced techniques, protocols, and safety procedures.
  • Facilitate the professional development of research personnel to maintain a high standard of work quality


Lab Management:

  • Oversee and manage daily laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance, inventory management, and safety protocol enforcement.
  • Coordinate lab schedules and resources, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and implement new lab management strategies to improve efficiency and research output.


Reporting and Publications:

  • Prepare comprehensive reports on all phases of research projects, contributing to scientific journal articles.
  • Take a lead role in drafting publications and presenting findings at scientific conferences


Required Qualifications

  • Extensive expertise in microbial biology, phage biology, molecular biology, CRISPR and CAST-based genome editing and high-throughput DNA sequencing techniques.
  • Experience in cultivating microbial communities, including isolation, culture maintenance, and growth optimization under various conditions.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to lead collaborations and manage projects.
  • Advanced degree in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology, Microbiology, Bioengineering, or a related field and/or equivalent experience/training.

 

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $73,077.46 (Step 1) - $96,377.52 (Step 15).
