The Digital Technology and Culture program at Washington State University in Pullman invites applications for an Assistant Professor, Data Visualization starting August 2020. Ideal candidates would have a research focus and/or creative production in one or more of the following broadly interpreted areas: visualization, visual analytics, visual arts, and data-driven storytelling with an emphasis on ethical, social and cultural considerations including the application of computational methods to humanistic, artistic, and social scientific research questions, programming, data analysis and creative productions such as exhibitions or digital collections. We are especially interested in candidates using data visualization and computational methods creatively and collaboratively to address significant cultural, social, political, and economic challenges faced by underrepresented populations on a national and/or global scale. This includes, but is not limited to, Indigenous, Native American, and First Nations communities, the African diaspora, Latin(x) populations, and LGBTQia+ groups. This is a permanent, tenure-track, nine month, appointment. Tenure home will be within the College of Arts and Sciences, the unit will be negotiable, depending on applicants area of emphasis. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and benefits are competitive.
As an Assistant Professor the successful applicant is expected to teach undergraduate courses with an emphasis on creative and critical data visualization; aid in the management and development of lab spaces; be an active part of the DTC core faculty; engage in creative production and/or conduct scholarly research leading to publications in areas of expertise; and support current and emerging research, teaching, and creative activities in digital research on campus and within the region. The successful candidate will teach core courses in the DTC major along with specific courses in one or more of the three DTC degree options: Information Structures and Systems, Interactive Technologies and Development, and/or Digital Cinema, Sound and Animation. Candidates teaching, research, and/or creative production will emphasize data visualization, analysis, and storytelling with data in a global social/cultural context.
Campus and Program Description
WSU is a land grant, multi-campus, state university. The Data Visualization position will serve on the Pullman campus, located in Eastern Washington on the traditional homelands of the Palus Band of Indians and the ceded lands of the Nez Perce Tribe. The successful candidate will join a growing interdisciplinary program consisting of scholars, teachers, and practitioners of design, animation, critical digital literacy, digital media studies, information ethics, critical game studies, and software studies. The program offers the B.A., as well as a graduate certificate in digital culture and humanities. The DTC program values engagement with critical theory and creative production and places an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion in course work, research, service, and scholarship. 1. MFA, MDe, MAD, MGraph, or Ph.D. in Information Sciences, Data Analytics, Informatics, Information Design, Interactive Media, Visualization, Interdisciplinary Humanities, Digital Humanities or related area by time of appointment;
2. Evidence of successful classroom and individual instruction;
3. Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty and to mentor students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds;
4. Evidence of a productive research program or creative production appropriate to projected rank and responsibilities.
1. Experience managing or working in a lab or collaborative production spaces and programs;
