Utah Valley University (UVU) is an undergraduate teaching institution which invites qualified candidates to apply for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor within the Department of Biology. This position will begin August 2019, but a later start date may be negotiable. Candidates must have a Doctorate in Physiology or Doctorate in a closely allied field emphasizing use of physiological techniques as a major aspect of the doctoral work (neurophysiology, cellular or molecular physiology, physiological studies related to endocrine or developmental pathways, etc.), possess a broad skill set for using standard research methods in the field of Physiology, and be able to translate such methods to use within an undergraduate research environment. Because UVU is an open-enrollment institution dedicated to teaching undergraduates, the successful candidate must also possess a strong commitment to effective engaged teaching methods. It is expected that the candidate will develop innovative course delivery methods (hybrid courses, flipped classrooms, etc.) and develop a research program with the primary component being mentoring undergraduates in the methods of scientific inquiry. Additionally, this research must be sufficiently robust to result in a reasonable amount of peer-reviewed publications. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in Human Physiology (ZOOL 2420), College Biology for majors (BIOL 1610), as well as other classes as needed by the department. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an undergraduate research program that results in peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to promote successful growth of the department and serve on department, college, and university committees as fitting a tenure-track position.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a Doctorate in Physiology or closely related biological discipline. Evidence of experience teaching human physiology to undergraduate students. .

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of the theory and practice of Human Physiology
  • Demonstrable ability to utilize a broad range of research methods in the field of Physiology. Familiarity with techniques used in molecular, cellular, tissue and organismal physiology (including imaging, modeling and computational analysis) is expected.
  • Demonstrable skill in incorporating evidence-based pedagogy; for example, the use of active learning techniques.
  • Demonstrable abilities to develop curricula and teach courses, communicate in written and verbal form, work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students.
  • Demonstrable ability and desire to mentor undergraduate student research.
  • Demonstrable ability and desire to mentor undergraduate student research.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrate strong knowledge of active learning pedagogies and have an established record of incorporation of those techniques in the classroom (especially in Biology and Human Physiology). Experience in or strategies for teaching at open-enrollment institutions. Publication record that indicates successful use of physiological methods and mentorship of undergraduates.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to function effectively in classroom and laboratory environments. May have the opportunity to teach evening or weekend classes and at satellite campuses and in hybrid and online settings.
