Position description

The Ronda lab at the Innovative Genomics Institute at UC Berkeley is seeking a highly motivated Assistant Project Scientist to join our multidisciplinary lab. Our research focuses on mapping the human-microbiome interactome using Systems Biology and Synthetic Biology. Our lab develops novel technologies to engineer and modulate microbiomes. We employ multiple model system such as mouse models and gut organoids to understand the fundamental mechanisms of host-microbiome communication and their implications for human health and disease. We are multidisciplinary lab and for this position we are seeking people with diverse backgrounds including synthetic biology, microbiology/microbiome, systems biology, computer science/bioinformatics/AI.

The individual in this position will contribute to research that spans two primary areas:

  1. Metagenomics, Metaproteomics, and Mobile Genetic Elements: The work will involve exploring the genetic landscape of microbiomes, focusing on the interactions and functions of mobile genetic elements. This includes analyzing complex datasets to identify new genetic sequences, proteins, and molecular pathways that play key roles in microbial ecosystems. The research aims to advance the understanding of these systems at a fundamental level and provide insights that could have far-reaching implications in areas such as microbial genetics, host-microbe interactions, and biotechnology.
  2. Characterization of the Immune-Microbiome Axis Using OMICS Technologies: The position will also involve studying the intricate relationship between the immune system and the microbiome. This work will integrate various high-throughput OMICS technologies, such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, to characterize how microbes influence immune responses and vice versa. By applying these cutting-edge methodologies, the research seeks to uncover novel mechanisms that regulate immune-microbiome communication, which may contribute to advancements in health, disease prevention, and therapeutic development.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute bioinformatics and metagenomics projects.
  • Integrating multi-OMICS data
  • Develop machine learning tools
  • Mentor students and contribute to grant proposals.

Publish high-impact papers

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent) program

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
PhD (or equivalent international degree)

Preferred qualifications

  • PhD in Genetics, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, or a related field.
  • Expertise in bioinformatics, metagenomics, and microbiome research.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience with computational strategies for identifying and validating small genes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with OMICs technologies, data analysis and machine learning.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
