Postdoctoral Associate- Biological Sciences

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) in the biological sciences. Experience in basic cell and molecular biology techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:
The candidate should have experience in:

  • Analysis of large data sets (RNA sequencing, single cell sequencing, etc.);
  • Conducting experiments using cell culture and mouse models;
  • Data analysis and manuscript preparation, including producing figures for manuscripts;
  • Laboratory maintenance, including keeping a detailed laboratory notebook, and managing undergraduate students.

Brief Description of Duties:
The successful individual will be appointed as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine. The overall research goal of the laboratory is to study factors involved in the maintenance of homeostasis of the kidney epithelium under physiological and pathophysiological conditions.

The laboratory of Dr. Sandeep Mallipattu in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine is seeking highly motivated candidates for postdoctoral training related to chronic kidney disease. Our research program focuses on identifying mechanisms involved in the progression of chronic kidney disease. Specifically, we investigate the mechanisms that regulate proliferation, differentiation, and regeneration in the kidney. We have found evidence that highly specialized family of transcription factors, Krppel-Like Factors (KLFs), are critically involved in regulating fundamental cellular processes in the kidney. We are currently using novel in vitro and in vivo approaches to establish the physiological and pathophysiological functions of KLFs in various disease processes (Diabetic Nephropathy, Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, acute kidney injury transition to renal fibrosis); as well as high-throughput screening strategies to identify small molecular compounds that might serve as novel therapeutic agents in disease based on their ability to modulate the expression and function of KLFs.

Successful applicants may select from multiple projects and should have experience in most of the following areas: 1) Background in cell/molecular biology, 2) Experience with transgenic mouse models, 3) Experience with cell and molecular biology techniques including PCR, western blotting, flow cytometry, cell culture and immunohistochemistry assays. The applicant must have excellent writing and communication skills and will be expected to take an active role in oral presentations, manuscript preparation and grant applications. The applicant will also be responsible for the supervision and training of other lab members.

Specific Duties:

  • Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conduct experiments and data analysis.
  • Literature searches; staying current in the field by reading and discussing the literature and experimental results with the supervisor and PI.
  • Participate/Assist with writing and preparing manuscripts based on the experimental findings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

We offer competitive salary, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Applicants eligible for NIH training grants are encouraged to apply.

Screening of applications will begin immediately and the positions will remain open until filled. Only selected applicants will be contacted for an interview. Please submit cover letter, Curriculum Vitae (including list of publications) and at least two reference contacts.
