Position overview Position title: Scientific Director Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. "Off-scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position description
Cal-Cryo@QB3 is a core research facility that provides researchers with access to state of the art cryo electron Microscopes and related tools for high resolution structural biology imaging experiments. The California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences at UC Berkeley (QB3-Berkeley) is the home for Cal-Cryo. QB3-Berkeley supports research at the interface of the physical, biological, and engineering sciences. It is home to some of the world's leading laboratories in the application of cryo-EM to biological problems, and in the development of new cryo-EM imaging and computational technologies.
Cal-Cryo@QB3 is searching for a Scientific Director who will contribute to the cryo-EM research community at UC Berkeley via their independent contributions and by overseeing the Cal-Cryo facility.
Responsibilities: The scientific director will be responsible for all aspects of the operations of Cal-Cryo.
70% Collaborating with UC Berkeley researchers, carrying out collaborative research, acquiring and analyzing data, and preparing results for publication
- Mentoring UC Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in cryo-electron microscopy and cryo-electron tomography application and execution.
- Collaborating with UC Berkeley faculty to acquire funding for facility instrumentation. Conceiving, preparing, and submitting proposals for instrumentation grants, supplement grants, etc. Coordinating with faculty to assemble competitive proposals.
- Creating and running workshops to teach researchers cryo-EM: theory, sample prep, data acquisition, analysis and preparation for publication. Teaching researchers to use the Cal-Cryo instruments and analysis software.
- Coordinating and/or performing the use and maintenance of the Cal-Cryo instruments, such as use of the equipment by researchers, regularly checking alignments, facilitating and supporting remote users, maintaining records, general organization and upkeep of the lab, etc.
- Solicit usage by outside clients from industry and supervise fee-for-service data collection and analysis services.
20% Carrying out independent research on optimizing electron microscopy methodologies and best practices
- Engaging with researchers and vendors to stay current in emerging techniques and technologies in the field, and implementing best practices and emerging methodologies at Cal-Cryo.
- Providing a hub for the cryo-EM community at UC Berkeley: inviting vendors or researchers to give workshops or seminars.
- Representing UC Berkeley's facility and research at local, national, and international conferences.
10% Recruiting, training, supervising, and mentoring additional core facility staff to assist with the above duties
Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application) PhD (or equivalent international degree)
Additional qualifications (required at time of start) 4 years of research experience
Preferred qualifications
- PhD in science or engineering or related discipline
- Minimum of 2 (two) first author peer-reviewed publications
- Knowledge of cryo-EM and cryo-ET methods and techniques
- Demonstrated organization and communication skills
- Experience in proposal development
- Ability to coordinate a variety of simultaneous responsibilities
- Demonstrated problem solving and prioritization skills
