Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Bone Formation, Innate Immunity, and Microbiota

The Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Lipids in the Department of Medicine at Emory University is recruiting a highly motivated and independently minded postdoctoral fellow with an anticipated start date in the second or third quarter of 2022. This position will study interactions of the innate immune system and microbiota that impact endochondral bone formation. Dr. Daniel Perrien’s NIH-supported laboratory focuses on identifying critical inflammatory regulators of heterotopic ossification and bone repair/regeneration, with an emphasis on preclinical models and translational potential. Candidates with experience in any area of musculoskeletal biology, stem cell differentiation, inflammatory or TGFβ superfamily signaling, innate immunity, tissue repair, or microbiome research are encouraged to apply. Our laboratories are located on the main campus of Emory University with access to extensive resources for cellular, molecular, physiological, and bioinformatic studies, and the fellow will gain experience with a wide variety of techniques from whole animal procedures to molecular assays. The selected candidate will be expected to design and conduct experiments under minimal supervision, assist in writing manuscripts, and apply for grants/fellowships. Prior and current trainees in Dr. Perrien’s lab have received NIH-funded fellowships, numerous research awards, and moved on to prestigious faculty or government positions.

The position requires a Ph.D., M.D., or similar degree in a related field of study. The candidate must have excellent communication skills with the ability to write and give oral presentations in English. Experience with some combination of gene expression and protein techniques, IHC, genetically modified mice, mammalian tissue culture, microCT, histology, bioinformatics, and/or flow cytometry is desired.

  • Excellent written and oral communication in English.
  • Desire to write fellowship applications and manuscripts.
  • Able to work in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Familiar with standard cell culture, protein, and DNA techniques.
  • Experienced working with mice, histological analyses, and flow cytometry.


  • Design and execute experiments and develop research ideas with an increasing degree of independence
  • Assist with grant/manuscript writing.
  • Train other laboratory personnel.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate records.
  • Present research findings in informal meetings and at local/national/international conferences.

Required Credentials and Qualifications:

  • Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent in related discipline with at least one first-author publication
