Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. The current base salary range for this position is $83,300 -$108,900. "Off-scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position description

The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) at the University of California, Berkeley, is seeking applications for an Assistant Research Physicist to work on a CubeSat project focused on investigating particle acceleration and high-energy processes in solar flares and other eruptive phenomena in the high solar atmosphere. The successful candidate will lead the development and coordination of the Solar HARd x-ray Polarimeter (SHARP) instrument, which is funded to fly onboard the Solar PolArization and Directivity X-Ray Experiment (PADRE) 12 U CubeSat. In addition, the candidate will conduct observational analysis of high-energy phenomena at the Sun using data from past and current missions.

The candidate will work collaboratively with national and international partners, and will be expected to present their findings at national and international conferences, as well as publish their results in leading journals. The ideal candidate should have expertise in solar high-energy instrumentation and/or analysis of solar eruption observations.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
A PhD or equivalent international degree.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

  • Minimum one year of postdoctoral experience
  • Record of research activities during and after PhD degree



Preferred qualifications

  • Expertise in solar high-energy instrumentation and/or analysis of solar eruption observations
  • Experience in data analysis and scientific interpretation of solar flare data
  • Expertise in scientific programming languages, such as IDL, Matlab, Python
  • Ability to perform independent research.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working with CubeSat or suborbital missions is preferred but not required
  • Experience in X-ray detector calibration is preferred but not required
