The department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an appointee as an Associate or Full Specialist in the Barnes lab, in the area of yeast genetics, reconstitution biochemistry and chromosome inheritance.
The PI lab investigates the molecular mechanisms that mediate faithful chromosome inheritance. A unique in vitro reconstitution system was developed that faithfully recapitulates cell cycle-dependent changes in microtubule dynamics, chromosome capture, chromosome translocation along microtubules and transition from side binding to end binding. Studies are performed in yeast lysates prepared from wild-type and mutant cell lysates. Analysis of these processes depends on sophisticated fluorescence microscopy and facility with quantitative image analysis algorithms.
The group is highly interactive. The successful candidate is therefore expected to work well with other members of the team on collaborative projects and to be able to combine biochemical, genetic, molecular genetic and cell biological approaches to advance understanding of microtubule dynamics.
The position is further expected to make scientific and scholarly contributions to studies of microtubule-based chromosome capture and movement, and to achieve recognition in the professional and scientific community. Considerable independent input into the planning and execution of the research is also expected.
The position will keep detailed records of experiments performed, conclusions made, and communication of results orally and through lab notebook records.

In addition to participating in a project on chromosome capture and motility research, this individual will have responsibilities for overseeing lab safety protocols and for ordering.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Master's degree (or equivalent international degree)
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Minimum 5 years of research experience in biochemical cellular microtubule reconstitution and yeast genetics field.
- 10 or more years of research experience in biochemical cellular microtubule reconstitution and yeast genetics field preferred.
- PhD (or equivalent international degree) in molecular and cell biology or a related field.
- Extensive experience with yeast genetics.
- Experienced with cryo-electron microscopy sample preparation and cryo- electron tomography imaging.
- Extensive experience with the following microscopes is essential: Nikon Eclipse Ti2 and Zeiss Airyscan 2.
- Strong background in general cell biology as well as in-depth knowledge of, and expertise in, current advances in the fields of mitosis and microtubule dynamics regulation.
