The department of Bioproducts and Biosystems is looking for a
to join the Microbial Physiology -group
In this position you will be developing approaches and methods for modulating and controlling the physiology of microbial cells and microbial consortia for improving their performance in applications of industrial biotechnology and/or food and beverage fermentations. You will uncover the cellular physiology in quantitative terms, develop understanding of evolution of physiology, and contribute to developing predictive computational models for design and control.
In this position you will be combining computational and experimental methods. As part of the group lead by Associate Professor Paula Jouhten your work will enable you to make an impact. Engineered microbial cells have potential to be the solution for replacing the chemistry produced from oil. Microbial cells and consortia are involved also in every other area of human life, e.g. health, environment, food, and can thus be the means to tackle global grand challenges of climate change, sustainability, and food security.
Your background and experience
You have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field like computational biology, synthetic biology, or similar. We expect you to have a good knowledge of metabolic modelling or bioinformatics and either molecular biology or microbiology. In connection to modelling and bioinformatics you have experience on programming with R and Python. In experimental molecular biology or microbiology we expect you to have experience in aseptic working in laboratory and having performed cell cultivations with yeast and/or bacteria.
Good command of written and spoken English is a necessary prerequisite.

The contract is initially made for one year, with possibility of extension. The total duration of doctoral studies is four years. The position can be filled immediately. Our facilities are located at Aalto University Otaniemi campus in Espoo, Finland.
The expected starting salary for a doctoral candidate is approximately 2500€/month and salary will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. The contract includes occupational health care and Finland has a comprehensive social security system.
