The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the world’s leading universities for multidisciplinary research. The university has an international academic community of 40,000 students and staff members. The Department of Chemistry (http://www.helsinki.fi/kemia/english/) at the Faculty of Science carries out research on chemistry and its applications at an international level and provides academic teaching based on high quality research. The department forms accountability unit operating on an annual budget of 19 million euros and reports 200 person-years per annum. There are 15 professors at the Department.

The Department of Chemistry invites applications for

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN MATERIALS CHEMISTRY

The position is for two years and split between University of Helsinki and KTH in Stockholm. The expected starting time is in February 2019 or according to the agreement.

Project
Eco-friendly nanomaterials based on wood is an important ingredient for sustainable development. Nanocellulose is a successful example of recent research, leading to industrial applications. In the next phase, the lignocellulosic nanostructure in wood fibers and wood templates will be tailored for large-scale, load-bearing nanomaterials. Lignocellulose tailoring is based on novel lignocellulose dissolving agents, such as ionic liquids (ILs).

The objective of the project is to understand the mechanisms for IL structuring of biobased nanomaterials. This methodology can be used to fuse fibers and wood elements into new materials. It is of interest to develop material concepts, and methods for characterization and testing of ionic liquid effects.

The project is for two years and contains research periods both in Helsinki (University of Helsinki) as well as in Stockholm (KTH).

Experimental work
The project includes chemical tailoring of wood-based materials using ionic liquids. Laboratory work includes preparation of materials, and use of new ionic liquids developed at the University of Helsinki. Characterization work includes structural changes in wood biopolymers (hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin), as well as larger scale changes in wood structure.

Qualifications
The appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field. To be successful in the position, the candidate should have a background in chemistry and wood biopolymers with an interest in materials. Experience of microscopy is an advantage.

Salary and benefits
The salary will be in accordance with the University of Helsinki´s salary system (for teaching and research personnel), where level 5 is for a postdoctoral researcher. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary will be approximately 3300 – 3700 €/month.
