The Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University invite applications for a Research Professor appointment as Director of the Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS). This position will start as early as Summer 2025.

 

Position Overview

The Director of the Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS) is a senior-level, non-tenure track position (Research Associate Professor or Professor). This individual will spearhead one of the largest and most advanced electron and ion beam microscopy centers in North America. The Director collaborates closely with key figures within the College of Engineering, partnering colleges, other College of Engineering and University Centers, and the Enterprise for Research, Innovation, and Knowledge (ERIK) at OSU. Responsibilities include providing leadership and strategic direction, developing and expanding research programs, enhancing the center's public profile, and fostering relationships with government, industry, and alumni. The Director is also tasked with consulting faculty, senior researchers, staff, and students, managing CEMAS's strategic and operational plans, and cultivating a culture of excellence, diversity, and inclusivity throughout the center. The position is intended to support the microscopy usage of researchers inphysical and biological sciences within the university and external partners. The Director should have the potential to obtain external funding to support microscopy resources and research initiatives, and maintain and promote the visibility of CEMAS. The salary of this research faculty position will be 100% funded by CEMAS.

 

Performance Objectives

  • CEMAS Advocacy: Enhance the visibility and reputation of CEMAS among professional societies, academic circles, industry, government agencies, and the media; and also within the University, College of Engineering, and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Foster and maintain robust relationships with governmental and industry partners.
  • Program Development and Execution: Collaborate with faculty and researchers to uncover new funding prospects, assist in the preparation of proposals, secure financial support, and lead the business operations of the center. Cultivate cooperative relationships and alliances with primary R&D funding bodies and significant industry stakeholders.
  • Scholarship: Lead and participate in high quality scholarship efforts, which impact the field and enhance the scientific reputation of CEMAS.
  • CEMAS Operations and Growth: Responsible for working together with the College, CEMAS Assistant Directors, and Faculty Advisory Committee to formulate, monitor, and implement the CEMAS budget, facilities plan, and equipment strategy. Engage closely with the Advisory Committees to identify, attract, and propose candidates for faculty/researchers at CEMAS.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Foster, develop, and maintain relationships with external microscopy partners. Maintain regular interaction with leadership in College of Engineering, partnering Colleges, and the Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge. Promote active engagement with CEMAS Advisory Committees.
  • Research Team Management: Direct the recruitment, development, and management of the CEMAS research team. Set research performance benchmarks and conduct regular evaluations of research team performance, progress, and compensation plans.
  • Overall Leadership: Provide comprehensive leadership, strategic vision, and management for CEMAS.
  • Compliance: Ensure that all CEMAS operations, personnel, and facilities adhere to the required standards and lab safety regulations.
  • Supervision: Offer guidance and direction to CEMAS staff.

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • PhD in Physical Science, Biological Science, Engineering, or any relevant field.
  • A proven track record as a successful member of a research center, laboratory, or facility, with research activities closely aligned with those of CEMAS.
  • Demonstrated capability to establish and maintain productive partnerships with colleagues.
  • Experience in developing and leveraging collaborations between internal and external stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with the operations and environment of a university setting.
  • A strong track record of mentorship and guidance.

 

Desired:

  • Executive-level management and leadership experience.
  • Proven success in securing research funding from federal and/or industry grants.
  • Demonstrated ability to nurture and maintain external research funding relationships.
  • Capability to effectively collaborate with state and federal sponsors, as well as senior industry executives, to achieve ambitious goals.
  • Experience in organizing and developing systems, staffing, and infrastructure for both established and emerging enterprises.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to research, teaching, outreach, and engagement that align with Ohio State’s Shared Values.

The Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS) was established as a Center within the College of Engineering in 2013 to provide a world-class environment for the teaching and practice of electron microscopy. With one of the largest concentrations of electron and ion beam microscopy instruments in any North American institution, CEMAS brings together multidisciplinary expertise to drive synergy, amplify characterization capabilities and challenge what is possible in analytical electron microscopy. CEMAS offers a full-service, expertly designed environment for researchers to execute their entire microscopy and analysis project. Located in a purpose-built facility on the university’s West Campus, every instrument meets or exceeds manufacturer performance specifications. Department Information

The mission of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is to create, transfer, and preserve knowledge through impactful research, dynamic teaching, and effective training in materials science and welding engineering. We believe that innovation is fostered through diverse interactions and are committed to an inclusive environment. As one of the largest materials programs in the country, MSE at The Ohio State University transforms materials synthesis, development, processing, characterization, and joining. We provide students with state-of-the-art experimental and computational techniques, preparing them to be leaders in the materials industry and academia. Our facilities include Mars G. Fontana Laboratories, which opened in 2020 after a $59.1 million renovation, with Phase Two scheduled to open in 2025.
