Position description
The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Project Scientist at the Assistant, Associate, or full rank. The position will report to Professor Sarah Stanley. The Project Scientist will make significant and creative contributions in the area of Microbiology and Immunology.
The Stanley lab is interested in identifying new molecular mechanisms that mediate both successful immune control and evasion of immunity by the pathogen. We utilize a wide range of techniques and approaches, including bacterial and host genetics, microscopy, chemical biology, and proteomics to understand the physiology of Mtb inside of macrophages and the host pathways that are key mediators of the host-pathogen interaction. We are motivated by the belief that a better understanding of the Mtb host-pathogen interaction will allow for the rational design of the next generation of therapeutics and vaccines for treating this devastating disease.
This position is for a Project Scientist who will perform sponsored research evaluating novel immunotherapeutics for treating bacterial infection. This project is conducted with other researchers at UC Berkeley, as well as Harvard University, and is based on existing data evaluating specific experimental therapeutics for treating infections with Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Mycobacterium avium (MAC).
Under general direction, the successful candidate will serve as the project lead with responsibility for developing and conducting experiments (testing cell culture and animal models for infections, testing antibiotic candidates in the appropriate assays in order to guide further optimization and development) as well as responsibility for lab management (giving day-to-day work instructions for the project's Staff Research Associate, ordering supplies and equipment, etc.)
The duties of the position include: Infecting mice with MRSA and MAC, treating with novel therapies and evaluating outcomes Carrying out immunological analysis of infected animals Testing for efficacy of novel therapies in tissue culture Testing for efficacy of novel therapies against bacteria grown in vitro Performing toxicity testing in mice Managing and analyzing data Pursuing publication of research in peer-reviewed journals; Pursuing additional funding opportunities consistent with existing and future research programs and goals Developing and troubleshooting new related research directions Training and mentoring lab members Presenting data to project members Collaborating with other scientists across campus and with collaborators at Harvard University
