The University of Kansas, Department of Physics & Astronomy seeks applications for a Laboratory Coordinator/Machinist in its Machine Shop. The expected start date is December 5, 2022. This is highly skilled work in the design and fabrication of equipment and apparatus requiring precision, accuracy, and adherence to very close tolerances. Work requires the use of manual machines such as mills, lathes, band saws, grinders and the programming/setup/operation of CNC mills and a CNC lathe. Tasks include welding and sheet metal work. Incumbent will be expected to perform fine tolerance precision work from oral or written instructions, pencil sketches, blueprints and models and apply creatively inventive techniques for specialized departmental problems. Experience with AutoCAD and CAD/CAM software is helpful. The hired candidate should have some appreciation of the science goals of the projects being supported in the Physics and Astronomy Department and also understand that their creative input is crucial to achieving those science goals.
Required qualifications include: High School/GED and five years’ related experience; three years’ experience operating and maintaining high precision scientific instrumentation; six months’ experience in machine tool technology or certification from an accredited technical school; two years’ experience or education which demonstrated knowledge of mechanical drawing, CNC programming, CAD design (e.g. AutoCAD/Inventor).
