Postdoctoral Associate- High Energy Physics

Postdoctoral Associate- High Energy Physics

Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
PhD (or foreign equivalent) in High Energy Physics in hand by June 2023. Experience in the analysis of data from high energy physics experiments.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with tracking reconstruction and/or b-tagging algorithms and/or other particle identification algorithms. Experience in either detector design, construction or commissioning, especially in the silicon tracker detector domain, and knowledge of their implications in terms of physics performance.

Brief Description of Duties:
The primary purpose of this position is performing research on a variety of topics within the Stony Brook ATLAS Group, in collaboration with Professor Giacinto Piacquadio, and participating in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate students in the group. The group research activities currently focus on measuring the Higgs boson coupling to b- and c-quarks, as well as improving the determination of the Higgs self-potential in the HH to bbtautau channel. Significant emphasis is also put on improving and calibrating tracking and b-jet identification tools, as well as participating in the upgrade of the tracker (ITK) for the High Luminosity phase of the LHC.

  • Perform research in experimental high energy physics in collaboration with the PI and within the ATLAS Collaboration. In particular, the incumbent will be expected to work on physics analyses in ATLAS with the aim of searching for new physics or performing Standard Model measurements, with an emphasis on physics channels with either one or two Higgs bosons and b-quarks in the final state.
  • Work on either particle identification in the tracking or b-tagging domain, or on the ITK tracker upgrade project for the HL-LHC in collaboration with the ATLAS group of the close-by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL).
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the research group.
  • Present research results either in workshops and conferences or by preparing publications with such results.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Notes:
Travel Required - The incumbent will travel to attend ATLAS meetings, workshops and conferences; in addition he/she might reside for periods of one to many months at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland) in order to collaborate with colleagues from the ATLAS experiment and potentially take on coordination roles.

The appointment is initially for three years and renewable annually, for a maximum length of five years. Interested candidates should upload their curriculum vitae, a research statement (max 2 pages) and arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent directly to Tracy Hillenbrand, M.A. at tracy.hillenbrand@stonybrook.edu
