Summary:

The Department of Biology at Utah Valley University invites applications for an open rank tenure-track faculty position, to begin in August 2020. We are seeking an outstanding candidate with a background in human physiology and pathophysiology. The successful candidate should have a strong commitment to undergraduate education and a research program amenable to utilizing undergraduate students. Candidates must have a doctorate degree or equivalent. a research background in physiology/pathophysiology or related discipline, and a strong commitment to effective teaching utilizing data-driven pedagogies in the classroom. Teaching responsibilities include: Courses in Human Physiology (Zoology 2420) Pathophysiology (Zoology 4400), with the potential of teaching graduate level courses in human pathophysiology; as well as additional biology courses including courses within the successful applicant's area of expertise, or as needed by the department. The successful candidate is expected to establish an active research program that involves mentoring undergraduates and leads to peer-reviewed publications. Additional responsibilities include working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to promote successful growth of the department and serving on department, college, and university committees as fitting a tenure-track position. Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a doctorate in human physiology or pathophysiology or closely related biological discipline is required. Evidence of experience teaching physiology/pathophysiology or related courses to undergraduate students. Must be willing to work non-traditional hours and/or at satellite locations.

ABD applications will be considered if doctorate verification is received by March 30, 2020.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of the theory and practice of Human Physiology
  • Demonstrable ability to utilize a broad range of research methods in the field of Physiology. Familiarity with techniques used in molecular, cellular, tissue and organismal physiology (including imaging, modeling and computational analysis) is expected.
  • Demonstrable skill in incorporating evidence-based pedagogy; for example, the use of active learning techniques.
  • Demonstrable abilities to develop curricula and teach courses, communicate in written and verbal form, work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students.
  • Demonstrable ability and desire to mentor undergraduate student research.


Preferred Qualifications:

Strong knowledge of active learning pedagogies and an established record of incorporation of those techniques in the classroom (especially in general physiology and/or pathophysiology courses). Experience or strategies for teaching at open-enrollment institutions. Experience in and/or commitment to hybrid and online instruction. Publication record and/or work experience that indicates successful use of physiology related methods. Evidence of mentorship of undergraduates.

Physical Requirements:

Work is normally performed in a classroom, laboratory and office environment.
