The Department of Chemistry at the University of North Texas (UNT) is seeking applications and nominations for the UNT Welch Chair in Chemistry, an endowed position at the rank of Professor, to start in the 2020-2021 academic year. The successful candidate will maintain an internationally recognized research program in any area of experimental, theoretical, or computational chemistry, engage in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, and participate in service to the Department and UNT. The candidate is expected to play a key leadership role in the Department’s efforts to strengthen its research infrastructure, increase the size of its faculty, and reinforce UNT’s status as a Carnegie R1 institution.
We are seeking candidates with outstanding records of scholarly achievement, leadership experience in academic institutions and in the broader scientific community, dedication to educating and mentoring students and junior researchers, and commitment to fostering a scholarly and collegial academic environment. The Welch Chair is expected to provide scientific leadership to help propel the Department to higher levels of accomplishment, create synergistic impacts on existing research programs, participate in externally-funded research, and demonstrate a commitment to innovation in undergraduate and/or graduate education and research mentoring. Nationally, UNT is ranked in the top tier of research universities according to the Carnegie Classification (R1-Very High Research Activity). With over 38,000 students, UNT is one of the largest educational institutions in Texas and the most comprehensive university in the Dallas-Fort Worth/North Texas area. UNT’s student population reflects the diversity of the region and is 24% Hispanic or Latinx, 14% Black or African American, and 52% women. The Denton community combines close proximity to one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country with an intimate and culturally vibrant college town atmosphere. The UNT Chemistry Department has 21 faculty members, about 100 graduate students, and about 250 undergraduate majors, and is entering a growth phase with plans to hire up to 10 tenure-track faculty members over the next five years. Recognized research strengths include computational chemistry, photochemistry, and materials chemistry, as well as a growing interdisciplinary emphasis on chemical biology.
