The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Tufts University (Medford, MA, https://as.tufts.edu/physics) invites qualified candidates to apply for a tenure-track position in Astrophysics starting September 1, 2023. The Tufts Physics and Astronomy Department consists of seventeen tenured or tenure-track faculty and has strong research programs in high energy physics, condensed matter, cosmology and astrophysics. The Astrophysics group currently consists of two faculty who, as observational extragalactic astronomers, conduct an active and well-funded research program that provides research opportunities to  5-10 undergraduates and graduate students each year. The Tufts Astrophysics group has successful observing programs with ground-based and space-based facilities such as JWST. They are members of multiple international collaborations, especially the HyperSupremeCam Prime Focus Spectrograph legacy survey collaboration, whose primary goals involve questions in galaxy evolution, galactic archaeology and cosmology. We encourage candidates who demonstrate outstanding research and commitment to teaching, mentoring and community development to apply.

Qualifications

Candidates are required to have a PhD in Astrophysics at the time of application. They should have a strong promise/experience in research and an interest in teaching and involving undergraduate students in research. They are expected to develop a vibrant, funded research program that involves undergraduate and graduate students and postdocs. They would contribute to departmental teaching at all levels including developing new courses to complement existing offerings in Astrophysics. We are primarily interested in candidates with research expertise that will complement our existing research in observational extragalactic astronomy, as well as potentially strengthen inter-disciplinary ties within the department. This includes but is not limited to the following areas: stellar astrophysics, exoplanets, high-energy astrophysics, multi-messenger astrophysics, time-domain astronomy, computational astrophysics, observational cosmology.

We are committed to increasing the diversity of the faculty of the Physics & Astronomy Department at Tufts. Therefore, members of under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. We are committed to follow the best practices that help combat the traditional biases that stand in the way of hiring candidates from under-represented groups.

Application Instructions

All applications are submitted via Interfolio, at apply.interfolio.com/116021.  Applicants should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae with a publication list, a research plan, a statement of teaching and mentoring philosophy, a statement of diversity, equity and inclusion, and three confidential letters of recommendation.  Please arrange for the letters of recommendation to be directly uploaded through the Interfolio portal. The research plan and the statements should each not exceed 4 pages. The statement of diversity, equity and inclusion should describe the applicant’s efforts and aspirations to promote equity, inclusion and diversity through teaching, mentoring, research and service.

For full consideration, applications should be submitted by December 15, 2022; there is no guarantee that applications received after that date will be considered.
