The current salary schedule range for an entering tenure-track faculty member is $60,856 - $95,406 plus an earned doctoral bonus of $3,042.80. Depending on the entry step, the faculty member advances one-step each year and has the potential to reach the current maximum step of $121,454, depending on the educational level attained. Starting salary is commensurate with academic preparation and full-time related, paid experience. In addition to salary, each full-time employee participates in a "cafeteria style" health and welfare benefits program.

Santa Barbara City College is seeking a full-time, tenure track faculty member position in Biological Sciences to start in Fall 2022. In 2009, SBCC was designated as an Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting our responsibility to support and serve the needs of our Latina/o/x students. Moreover, given our overall student population, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to join a department that is dedicated to the use of curriculum and pedagogy that shares SBCC's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse post-traditional student population.

The Biological Sciences Department seeks a biologist with a strong commitment to teaching at a community college. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in general biological principles and modern research techniques within biomedical sciences. Teaching and/or research experience in human anatomy and physiology is essential. Cadaver-based instructional experience in human anatomy and a well-rounded knowledge of classic and current physiological laboratory technologies (e.g. Biopac) are critical. Assignment may include teaching lectures and laboratories in Anatomy, Physiology, General Biology, and other courses at the majors or non-majors level. Other responsibilities include maintenance of office hours sufficient to meet student needs and college policy, full participation in departmental responsibilities, college service (such as committee assignments, co-curricular activities), and involvement in activities designed to improve teaching. Teaching assignments may also include weeknights and Saturdays.

Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook.

1. Master's in any biological science OR

2. Bachelor's in any biological science AND Master's in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science
OR the equivalent

3. Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to all of the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required material.

4. Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, culture, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.

  • Teaching experience in anatomy, physiology, and general biology utilizing instructional strategies that promote inclusivity and thus facilitate student learning.
  • Laboratory experience in microbiology, that includes knowledge and familiarity with techniques and equipment commonly used in these research fields.
  • Numerous semesters of teaching anatomy via cadaver-based instruction
  • Demonstrable experience in using various laboratory resources and equipment for instruction in Human Physiology
  • Experience with planning, organization, and implementation of campus-wide events to increase success in Biomedical and/or STEM courses
  • Ability to modify instructional delivery in anatomy and physiology for a wide-variety of learning styles and student academic preparedness
  • Experience in developing distance education courses and teaching in an online format.
  • Demonstrated experience using strategies and methods that enhance student learning and success.
  • Knowledge of and experience using Student Learning Outcomes to support student learning.

Selection Procedure:
The selection committee, who will recommend candidates for personal interviews at SBCC, will initially review online applications. A teaching demonstration will be required for selected applicants. After the
initial interviews have been conducted, the committee will recommend the top candidates to the Superintendent/President for a final interview. The successful candidate's name will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval and authorization to hire. Candidates will participate primarily in remote interviews and in some instances final interviews may be conducted in person while observing all health and safety protocols as approved by the Santa Barbara County Health Department.
