Empire Innovation Professor - Quantum Information Science and Engineering - Stony Brook University

The Computer Science (CS) Department and the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at Stony Brook University invite applications for a tenure-track/tenured faculty position in Quantum Information Science and Engineering with an expected start date of Fall 2022. Although the position is expected to be filled at the Associate Professor rank, exceptionally qualified candidates at any rank in all areas of Quantum Information Science and Engineering, including quantum algorithms, communication, complexity, and devices, are invited to apply. Applications will be processed on an ongoing basis until the position is filled. The position comes with the title of SUNY Empire Innovation Professor. The position will be solely or jointly in the CS or ECE departments based on the area of the candidate. Applicants should hold a PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related discipline and must demonstrate outstanding research accomplishments and potential.

The Department of Computer Science currently has 56 full-time faculty members and is expected to recruit additional members in the next several years. The Department offers two undergraduate programs in Computer Science and Information Systems; and MS and PhD programs in Computer Science. Detailed information on the Department can be found on the Department website: http://www.cs.stonybrook.edu. In 2015 the department moved to a new state-of-the-art 70,000 sq ft building.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering currently has 30 full-time faculty members. It is expected that the department will recruit more faculty members in the next few years. The department offers undergraduate, MS, and PhD programs in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. The department also offers an ABET-accredited BS online program in Electrical Engineering.

Quantum Computing at Stony Brook: Faculty in the CS and ECE departments working on Quantum Information Science and Engineering research have close ongoing collaboration with the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and its affiliated C. N. Yang Institute of Theoretical Physics. The Institute has significant strength in experimental and theoretical aspects of Quantum Computing, including Quantum Information Systems, Quantum Communication, Quantum Materials, and Quantum Simulations. The University is co-manager of nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), a Department of Energy laboratory. The university is a partner in the Northeast Quantum Systems Center (https://www.bnl.gov/NEQsys/), and the Co-Design Center for Quantum Advantage (C2QA, https://www.bnl.gov/quantumcenter/), a National Quantum Information Science (QIS) Research Center, based at BNL.

The CS and ECE departments play significant roles in multiple interdisciplinary centers on campus. They include the Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation (https://ai.stonybrook.edu/), Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT, https://www.cewit.org/ ) and Institute of Advanced Computational Science (IACS, https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/iacs/index.php).
