The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore invites applications for the position of the Research Fellow in Volcanic Petrology. The Research Fellow will oversee the operation of the state-of-the-art analytical facilities (LA-ICP-MS, FEG-SEM) and conduct research on combining geochemistry, petrology, and modelling to better understand the signs of a potential caldera eruption, using case studies from around the Southeast Asian Ring of Fire and beyond.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the InVEST project and conduct multidisciplinary research into volcano-tectonic interactions. The role will focus on overseeing the operation of the state-of-the-art analytical facilities at ASE/EOS (LA-ICP-MS and FEG-SEM) and using geochemical microanalysis, petrology and modelling to understand the mutual links between potential caldera-forming volcanism and tectonics in the SE Asia region and beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing the operation of EOS/ASE’s LA-ICP-MS and SEM labs

  • Maintaining instruments and ordering consumables.

  • Reconstructing magma storage depths/conditions for a suite of volcanic systems and relating them to local tectonics. P-T-X conditions will be constrained using melt inclusion suites and mineral thermobarometry.

  • Assessing the current state of one of more potential caldera reservoirs from petrology, geophysics, and/or modelling

  • Reconstructing the temporal evolution of magma reservoir properties at one of more potential caldera systems. Petrological timescales will be determined via diffusion chronometry and/or geochronology.

Job Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. degree in Earth Sciences, Chemistry or a related field

  • Experience in independently operating LA-ICP-MS is strongly desired.

  • Experience in independently operating one of the following microanalytical techniques is desired: EPMA (Probe for EPMA /JEOL), FEG-SEM, Raman and FTIR.

  • Experience in processing petrological and/or geochemical data sets is strongly desired.

  • Demonstrated expertise in petrological modeling with a desire to develop skills complementary fields is desired.

  • Fieldwork experience may be beneficial but is not required.

  • Strong track record of publishing research relevant to the position in Tier 1 journals

  • As position requires stakeholder engagement in English, candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

  • Evidence of being able to work independently in their research and collaboratively, with a strong team spirit

Interested applicants should submit a CV, a statement of interest, and contact details of 2 referees. Incomplete applications will not be considered. For more details, please view http://www.earthobservatory.sg.

EOS seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit based on merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status, family responsibilities, or disability.

We regret to inform you that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
