    Position Overview

    The Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Kansas invites applications for a faculty position at the tenure-track Assistant professor or Associate professor level in Microbiology expected to begin as early as August 18th 2018.

    We are seeking outstanding candidates to apply for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant or associate Professor level in the area of Microbial Pathogenesis. Applicants are sought with demonstrated expertise in microbiology (bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, virology, or host-immune responses) and human infectious diseases with research interests related to the role microbes play in human health and disease.

    The Department of Molecular Biosciences ( is a multi-disciplinary and highly interactive research environment that includes over 30 faculty members. The University of Kansas has a diverse repertoire of excellent core facilities ( to support and facilitate research programs. Included for this position are specific resources and support mechanisms associated with the NIH Chemical Biology for Infectious Disease Center of Biomedical Research Excellence ( As such, preference will be given to those applicants with current or future plans to incorporate an aspect of chemical biology into their research.

    Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent degree in the biological sciences and at least two years of post-doctoral research experience. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level are expected to demonstrate potential for establishing an independent, externally-funded research program, and those at the Associate level must have extramural funding (as PI or MPI) with clear potential for continuance. The successful candidate will also direct graduate student research and participate in the undergraduate and graduate teaching missions of the University.     Job Description

    40% RESEARCH
    Maintain an active and productive research program that includes:
    1) Obtain external research funding.
    2) Publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
    3) Present findings at professional conferences.

    1) Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biology.
    2) Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught.
    3) Participate in the academic advising of undergraduate and graduate students.
    4) Mentor students in research, including serving as a dissertation/thesis director and professional mentor for students.

    20% SERVICE
    1) Serve on committees at the departmental, College, and/or University levels as the opportunities arise.
    2) Participate in professional service.
    3) Participate in departmental meetings.

    Required Qualifications

    Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of doctoral and postdoctoral experiences in the letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity described in curriculum vitae, (3) statements of research plans and teaching interests, and (4) contact information for three professional references:

    1) Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Biological Sciences or closely related discipline.
    2) At least 2 years of postdoctoral experience.
    3) Publications in peer-reviewed journals with innovative research objectives that demonstrate potential for excellence in research.
    4) Commitment to teaching courses in the life sciences, as evidenced by educational background and statement of teaching philosophy.

    For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure, all of the above are required. In addition, the individual must have an established record of funding, hold an active extramural grant (as PI or MPI), and be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching. The candidate must meet KU standards for research, teaching, and service sufficient to qualify for an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure.
