  • Postdoctoral Fellow in Microbial Ecology of Plastic Breakdown
    Biological Sciences
    Michigan Technological University

A postdoctoral position in applied environmental microbiology and molecular microbial ecology is open in the Department of Biological Sciences at Michigan Technological University in the Lab of Dr. Stephen Techtmann. This postdoctoral fellow will be part of a team researching methods for conversion of plastic waste into value-added products using microbial consortia.

The successful applicant will conduct research aimed at characterization of microbial consortia enriched on plastic breakdown products and optimize consortia composition and process conditions for optimal conversion and production of products of interest. This position is part of an ongoing project to investigate the ability of natural microbial consortia to break down plastics and optimize growth on building blocks of commonly used plastics. This candidate would work as part of a transdisciplinary team of bioengineers, chemical engineers, material scientists, and microbial ecologists to develop an integrated system for waste processing and reuse.

A Ph.D. in molecular biology, microbiology, or a closely related field is required. Specialization in microbial physiology, bioinformatics, and/or bioprocess engineering are desired. The ability to work independently as well as with a diverse research group and ability to meet deadlines and produce publications are desired.

Applicants should email a brief (1-page) research statement along with a CV and contact information for three references directly to Dr. Stephen Techtmann (smtechtm at mtu dot edu).
