    The Department of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment at Northern Illinois University (NIU) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin in August, 2023. We are seeking an individual whose research interests are in the broad areas of mineralogy, petrology, economic geology or a closely allied field. The department offers programs leading to the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, and currently has 19 faculty members, whose research and teaching interests are described on our web site at

    Position Summary

    The Assistant Professor is expected to develop a teaching and research program that integrates with one or more of the department’s related strengths in experimental mineralogy/petrology, geochemistry, igneous petrology, mineral physics, planetary geology, structural geology, and/or volcanology. The department’s facilities include an array of analytical instruments (e.g., SEM-EDSXRFXRD, ion chromatograph, and mass spectrometers) and field equipment. The Assistant Professor will be expected to establish a vigorous externally-funded research program, supervise Ph.D. and M.S. students, and have a commitment to excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Teach three to four 3-credit hour classes per year

    • Teach classes appropriate to their areas of expertise in at least one of the following areas of the department (Mineralogy, Petrology, Economic Geology or Volcanology)

    • Development of policies concerning common activities of the course, such as text selection, course requirements and assessments, as well as the training and supervision of instructors and teaching assistants

    • Supervisor graduate students and their original research

    • Publish peer-reviewed research and obtain external funding in support of research

    • Engage in service activities appropriate to their rank

    Minimum Required Qualifications

      • Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree in Geology or a related field.



    Additional Requirements

      • Knowledge of current disciplinary innovations and trends involving basic course administration and pedagogy.



    Preferred Qualifications

    • Demonstrated the potential for teaching introductory and upper level courses in the general field of Geology

    • Documented potential to develop a strong record of peer-reviewed publications and to obtain external research funding

    • Demonstrated ability or potential to supervise graduate students

    • Demonstrated ability or potential to promote diversity and inclusion in learning and work environments
