    Overview


    The Tufts University Genomics Core Facility (TUCF Genomics) works to provide quick and convenient services to scientists from both academia and industry. Our ongoing scientific relationships with technical consultants associated with the major instrument companies and our many contacts in the academic world and our hands-on experience enable us to provide research scientists with reliable products and results. We currently offer DNA sequencing, mass spectrometry analysis, next-gen DNA sequencing, peptide synthesis and protein sequencing. Our facility, instruments, computing systems and software are constantly upgraded to meet the challenging needs of the research scientist. Our primary goal is to provide quality performance and experienced support, both through our products and our people.


    What You'll Do


    Reporting to the Core Facility Scientific Director, the Core Specialist has responsibility for the isolation and purification of genomic DNA from a variety of sample types, including human stool and buccal swabs. The Specialist will be responsible for the production, purification, and lyophilization of Shiga toxins using anion-exchange and analog affinity chromatography for research and pharmaceutical use. The position will consult with researchers and students on methodology needed for their research. Additionally, the Specialist will work closely with the Facility Director to identity additional business opportunities for the available service lines, as well as evaluating and establishing new service lines for expanding capabilities to the research community.

    Responsibilities include:


     

    Operations


    • Performs the following:

      • DNA isolation from biological samples, including stools, buccal swap, whole/fresh blood, etc.

      • RNA isolation from biological samples

      • Library preparation for 16S rRNA metagenomic works

      • Strain identification / validation based Sanger sequencing, including amplification and full 16S rRNA gene sequencing

      • qPCR service

      • Production, purification, and lyophilization of Shiga toxins using anion-exchange and analog affinity chromatography for research and pharmaceutical use

      • Antibiotic stock activity quantification / validation using standardized protocol (CLSI MIC testing)

      • Nucleic acid extraction



    • Conducts project management for larger, multi-step projects for both Tufts researchers and external users

    • Determines antimicrobial resistant bacterial strains

    • Receives and reviews sample processing requests for single cell RNA-Seq on the 10X platform


    Training

    • Works with users to select protocols best suited to their needs; explore experimental options


    Administration

    • Establishes standard operating protocols




    What We're Looking For


    Basic Requirements:



    • Knowledge and experience typically acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s degree with more than 20 years experience required

    • Experience in the production, purification, and lyophilization of Shiga toxins

    • Experience with peptide synthesis

    • Experience with general lab equipment maintenance and repair


    Preferred Qualifications:



    • Demonstrated experience in project management and ability to multi-task

    • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills

    • Strong communication and customer service skills to deliver innovative solutions

    • Strong understanding of technologies used in research environments, lab instrumentation, computers and software, virtual applications, and desktops, databases

    • Demonstrated organizational skill with fine attention to details




    Pay Range

    Minimum $64,550.00, Midpoint $80,700.00, Maximum $96,850.00

    Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
