  • Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) of Earth Sciences in Critical Minerals
    Department of Earth Sciences
    University of Regina

    The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Regina invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the field of Critical Minerals with a start date of July 1, 2025. To address gender inequity in the field of earth science and alleviate the under-representation of women in such positions, this position is targeted at candidates who self-declare as women.

    A global transition to clean-energy technologies will drive increasing demand for critical minerals. In 2021, the Canadian Government released a list of 31 minerals considered to be “critical” to this transition and economic security. Similarly, the Province of Saskatchewan has made critical minerals a key focus of the provincial growth plan. Research fields that may contribute to this work include, but are not limited to, economic geology, petrology, structural geology, geochemistry, or novel sources for critical minerals.

    We seek an innovative female geoscientist with a proven record of research activity on critical minerals in any or all areas of mineral exploration, secondary recovery, or novel sources. It is expected that the successful candidate will develop a viable and strong, externally funded research program, with impacts at both the national and international level. The successful candidate is also expected to commit to inclusive teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, other highly qualified personnel, and demonstrate excellence or potential for excellence in teaching. While a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences or Geology is required at the time of appointment, early-career applicants and those with non-traditional career paths are encouraged to apply. Those with relevant post-doctoral or industrial research experience may use those experiences to demonstrate their research success in critical minerals.

    The Department of Earth Sciences is one of six departments in the Faculty of Science. As a small, dynamic unit it is recognized for its excellence in research, as well as high-calibre undergraduate and graduate programs in Geology and Environmental Geoscience. Our department includes nine tenured or tenure-track geoscientists and two lab instructors who have fostered relationships with industry and various provincial and federal agencies.

    A complete application should include:

    • a cover letter;

    • a detailed curriculum vitae;

    • a summary of past research achievements and future research plans focused on critical minerals of no more than two pages

    • a statement of teaching philosophy of no more than two pages

    • copies of two recent publications

    • contact information for three references. Applicants should consider equity, diversity, and inclusion in both their research and teaching statements.

    Applications received through the e-Recruit portal before the closing date will be considered; initial screening of applications will commence on October 21, 2024.  All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority.

    Closing date: October 21 2024

    Position starting date: July 1 2025
