    Job Description


    The Department of Biological Sciences at Old Dominion University seeks two Assistant Professors for 10-month, tenure track faculty positions. We invite applications from individuals who are using or developing quantitative, mathematical, bioinformatic (e.g., integration and analysis of -omics datasets) or computational approaches to study biological systems, and we are specifically seeking one individual with research focused on ecology, evolution, or organismal biology and a second individual with research focused on biomedical science, immunology, or microbiology. In both cases, we are seeking candidates who share ODU’s commitment to the principle that diversity and inclusion are critical to maintaining academic excellence.


    The successful candidates are expected to develop and maintain active research programs that are externally funded, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and contribute to service in the department. These positions will share in teaching of undergraduate and graduate-level quantitative courses in bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, GIS, modeling, or statistics. ODU has recently created a new School of Data Science that will provide many additional opportunities for collaboration. Both wet and dry laboratory space will be available, as well as access to excellent high performance computing research support.

     

    Excellent communication skills. Experience working with undergraduate and/or graduate student researchers.

     


    Minimum Qualifications - Education or training


    Candidates must have a doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Biology or a related discipline and relevant postdoctoral (or equivalent) experience.

     


    Minimum Qualifications - Special licenses, registration or certification


    Candidates must have:


    1. A strong scholarship record commensurate with experience

    2. Demonstrated potential to establish an active research program and to acquire external funding

    3. Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching

    4. Strong communication skills.


     


    Preferred Qualifications


    Candidates who demonstrate an ability to engage in interdisciplinary research are especially welcome.
