    Position description

    The Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar supervised and mentored by Berkeley's algebra and number theory RTG group, which includes Tony Feng, David Nadler, Martin Olsson, Sug Woo Shin, and Yunqing Tang. The direct supervisor/main PI mentor will depend on what area of research the candidate will focus on.

    Areas of interest include arithmetic geometry, representation theory, algebraic geometry, automorphic forms, number theory.

    This will be a 3-year position. Deferment can be considered for one year. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

    Teaching duties: The lecturer will be expected to teach two classes per year. Courses will be assigned on an as-needed basis. It is likely that the postdoc will be invited to help (co-)teach a new experimental course on mathematics exploration and research for undergraduates.

    General Lecturer duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), maintaining a course website, and using a learning management system( e.g. bCourses at UC Berkeley, Canvas, etc.).

    Research duties: the postdoc will be expected to work collaboratively with one or more of the PIs, write up results for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and disseminate research to the broader scientific community through seminar and conference talks, as is standard. Topics of research are algebraic geometry, number theory, and representation theory.

    Synergistic duties: The research group expects to organize weekly research seminars, learning seminars, and social gatherings. The postdoc would be expected to participate in activities when possible, and help to co-organize the seminars.

    In addition, the research group will run a summer REU. The postdoc will be expected to be involved for several weeks per summer.

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in a Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) program at the time of application.

    Additional qualifications (required at time of start)



    • A PhD (or equivalent international degree) is required by the start date of the job.

    • No more than three years of post-degree research experience.


    Preferred qualifications
    Research expertise in number theory, arithmetic geometry, algebraic geometry, or representation theory. Teaching experience.
