This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia’s discretion up to five additional years. You qualify for application if you received your PhD within a five-year timeframe prior to employment. As a Sandian, in your postdoctoral position, you may bid on regular Sandia positions as an internal applicant. In some cases, a possibility could exist for you to be converted to regular career positions during your term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
Work with corrosion experts and other members of the team;
Conduct experimental research in the characterization of stress corrosion cracking behavior of austenitic stainless steels contaminated with corrosive salts in atmospheric conditions;
Assess the effect of environmental controls (atmospheric and metal surface conditions) on crack initiation and growth;
Research will be performed within a large, multi-disciplinary project involving several university and national lab partners;
Due the work for publication of creative research in leading technical journals and presentations at national and international technical meetings.
PhD in Materials Science or a closely related discipline;
Expertise in physical and mechanical behavior of materials, with experience experimentally evaluating fracture of metallic materials;
Ability to characterize mechanical behavior relating to factors controlling crack initiation and propagation;
Strong record of independent research as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
Demonstrated academic excellence (graduate GPA
Familiarity with corrosion and stress corrosion cracking;
Ability to collaborate and get along with all members of an interdisciplinary research team;
Technical skills related to programming, data processing, and instrumentation;
Ability to work well with team members of diverse technical backgrounds;
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE
L-level security clearance.
The Storage and Transportation Technologies Department conducts the R&D to support the development of the technical basis for the extended storage and transportation of commercial used nuclear fuel, and safeguards and security modeling and analysis of nuclear fuel cycle facilities.The department produces peer-reviewed research reports pertaining to many areas of Used Nuclear Fuel Storage, Transportation, and Security including: Modeling and analysis of basic uranium chemistry; chemical instigators and mitigate of stress corrosion cracking of stainless steel; analysis of stress and strain on used nuclear fuel rods, cladding, and assemblies; Mod & Sim for Analysis for Safeguards and Security of Used Fuel.In addition, we produce peer-reviewed research reports in the areas of: Modeling and analysis of new concepts of geothermal well production; carbon sequestration efficiency improvements, and the understanding of radiation damage on microstructures.
