Departmental Overview

The Statistics Department in the Division of Math & Physical Sciences, College of Letters & Sciences was originally established in 1938 as the first center in the country for statistical research by Jerzy Neyman, one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century. Since its inception, graduates and faculty of Berkeley have shaped the foundations of statistics. The Statistics Department currently includes approximately 30 active faculty and emeriti, including six members of the National Academy of Science. The department is consistently ranked as one of the two premier graduate programs in statistics nationally. The department has an undergraduate, a professional master's degree, and a PhD program, with about 100 BAs, 40 MAs and 10 PhDs awarded each year. Courses in the department enroll more than 6,000 students annually.

The Statistics Masters is a one-year, full-time professional degree program designed to prepare students for careers in industry. The Masters Program Coordinator will direct the administration of the program including: academic advising, recruitment, admissions, financial aid, the evaluation and awarding of fellowships, student orientation, career counseling, internships, and all other activities related to the Professional Masters Program. The incumbent will advise and make recommendations to the Department Chair, Department Manager, Faculty Chair of the Masters Program, and masters students on all areas of the program.

This position will also work closely with the Director of the Industry Alliance Program (IAP) to connect our industry members to the graduate student talent in Statistics, including acting as a liaison with industry recruiters to plan and run student recruitment events as well as identifying internship and career opportunities in industry for Statistics' masters students.

Responsibilities

Within the Statistics Department, the incumbent is responsible for the Professional Masters Degree in Statistics.
  • Works closely with the Department Chair, Manager and the Faculty committee, in key issues of the structure, policies, and operation guidelines for the Professional Masters Program in Statistics.
  • Evaluates complex student services issues and determines best approaches for the program and the department.
  • Actively participates in long-range strategic planning for the Masters program.
  • Prepares program reports and coordinates program proposals required by the UC Office of the President.


Academic Advising:
  • Directs and coordinates the administration of the Professional Degree Program, including a full range of student services to current and prospective masters degree students on all aspects of the program from admission through the awarding of degree.
  • Identifies and resolves intricate student issues/grievances such as alleged discrimination, complex grade dispute issues, and students' personal crises; approves, denies or makes recommendations regarding petition exceptions that affect the requirements of multiple departments.
  • Works with the Chair and Course & Curriculum Officer to facilitate new course approval working with the Academic Senate, Graduate Division, and similar organizations.
  • Identifies and develops evaluations tools for courses, instructors and programs.
  • Evaluates course curriculum through student/participant evaluations and level of interest shown.


Recruitment and Admissions:
  • Determines best approaches for outreach strategies, and helps identify and evaluate prospective program partnerships.
  • Coordinates reviews and resolves specific issues for international and professional students.
  • Oversees the enrollment of admitted students, evaluates students on degree requirements and petitions for exceptions.
  • Manages MA Student Visit Day as part of recruitment.
  • Works with the Faculty Chair to plan and manages summer boot-camp for incoming masters students and manages all activities the masters student orientation.
  • Assists in the planning and execution of commencement with the rest of the student services team.


Financial Aid:
  • Manages the PDST for a program governed by University return-to-aid requirements.
  • Resolves PDST and financial aid issues, which can be extremely sensitive, specialized, or complex.
  • Administers the Professional Degree Supplemental Tuition funds according to guidelines. Establishes departmental guidelines for financial aid awards within the program, which must be compliant with campus and University policies and departmental goals.


Career Counseling:
  • Coordinates industry recruitment events, tech talks and career info sessions, interview days with graduate students and maintaining the student resume/CV database.
  • Works with industry partners to identify internship and career opportunities for students in the program.
  • May give presentations to prospective employers.
  • Develops and leads career workshops to help students develop professional skills such as resume and cover letter writing skills, interviewing skills, and salary negotiations.
  • Holds career counseling advising sessions for students in the program


Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Experience and skills in career counseling, including experience running career counseling workshops.
  • Strong computer application programs skills.
  • Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
  • Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Ability in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Strong oral and written skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the Statistics field post-degree employment opportunities and practices
  • Experience working as a statistician and/or in private industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in program management, preferably in the context of higher education-industry relations.
  • Training in project management.
  • Statistical background.


Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $55,000.00 - $75,000.00.
