Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) is an integrating and inseparable part of the Brazilian public education system. UFMG was established in 1927 and since then its history has been characterized by a relentless quest for increasing standards of excellence and relevancy in relation to teaching, research and outreach activities. UFMG has been ranked among the best universities in the country as a result of evaluation procedures conducted among institutions of higher education in Brazil. It is part of the international university milieu and boasts impressive academic indicators. Currently, UFMG has approximately 2500 faculty members who teach for 75 undergraduate courses, and 77 graduate courses in all areas of knowledge, in a total of 47000 students. Its main campus occupies an area of 8.8 km2 . UFMG is the first university in Brazil in number of registered patents.
