The UM-SJTU Joint Institute (JI) was jointly established by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Michigan in 2006. It is located in Shanghai, China. The goal of this partnership is to build a world-class teaching and research institute in China for nurturing innovative leaders with global visions.
The joint institute upholds a unique educational philosophy of “Internationalization, Interdisciplinarity, Innovation, Quality”. Over the past decade, JI has explored a shortcut to build a world-class institute in China and shaped a famous set of development models through fusing the Sino-US educational philosophy and characteristics.
As a successful example of international education cooperation, JI has been at the forefront of China’s higher education reform. All courses are taught in English by world-class faculty recruited from global leading universities. Students not only acquire knowledge of their academic fields but also gain soft skills, such as creativity, teamwork, communication, and leadership. We also provide students abundant opportunities to study abroad at our partner universities around the world.
