The College of Science within the University of Canterbury (UC) is seeking to appoint an exceptional academic leader to provide strategic leadership to the newly created School of Earth and Environment | Te Kura Aronukurangi. The Head of School will drive the continued development of excellence in research and teaching, while establishing and implementing an innovative and bold vision aligned to UC’s new strategic objectives.
With a PhD in a relevant field, you will be an internationally recognised academic at a senior level, able to demonstrate substantive management experience, including the leadership of transformational change.  A proactive strategist and change maker, who is committed to making a difference; you will possess outstanding interpersonal skills, along with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team to work with a sense of collective responsibility.
Reporting to the Pro Vice-Chancellor – College of Science, you will thrive in an atmosphere of innovation and will demonstrate critical thinking along with creative and flexible responses in a challenging and dynamic environment. You will need to demonstrate an appreciation of the different disciplines and epistemologies included in the newly combined School. Proven ability to lead resourceful approaches to developing new funding opportunities will be essential, as will be a strong commitment to bi-culturalism.
The School of Earth and Environment | Te Kura Aronukurangi has been created from a merger of the two Departments of Geography and Geological Sciences and the Waterways Centre for Freshwater Management, and it also encompasses Gateway Antarctica. The School includes an estimated total of 567 equivalent full-time students and approximately 63 full-time equivalent staff. The Department of Geography includes specialisations in physical geography, human geography, geospatial science, and resource and environmental management, and the Department of Geological Sciences includes teaching and research programmes in geology, engineering geology, disaster, risk and resilience and environmental science. The Waterways Centre for Freshwater Management is an inter-institutional and interdisciplinary teaching and research centre based at UC and Lincoln University. Gateway Antarctica is UC’s centre for interdisciplinary Antarctic teaching and research, which includes the globally-unique Postgraduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies.
