Evolution of the continental crust as approached by tectonic, chemical, and isotopic studies of modern processes and ancient products. Geographic foci of such studies include Izu-Bonin-Mariana island arc system in the Western Pacific, Neoproterozoic crust of NE Africa and Arabia, China, and Iran. These processes and products are studied using a wide range of analytical techniques, including major and trace element analyses, and radiogenic isotopes, and U-Pb zircon geochronology. Stern also studies the evolution of Plate Tectonics through Earth history and how new subduction zones form. \r\n Stern is also co-Director of the UTD Geosciences Micro-imaging Lab and the Permian Basin Research Lab and is Director of the Global Magmatic and Tectonic Lab and UTD Geoscience Studios (see our Youtube channel). He is also Editor-in-Chief of International Geology Review.\r\n
