The research interests of Prof. Safa have been primarily in the areas of networking and mobile computing. The outcome of his work was published in premiere and reputable venues. His experience in this field dates back to his graduate years at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, where he proposed paradigms to reduce the mobility signaling cost in circuit switching based wireless and mobile networks. Because of his involvement in developing software for data surveillance and network lawful intercept at ADC telecom and SS8 networks, Prof. Safa became versed in designing and implementing networking standards and communication protocols. At AUB, he has shifted towards packet switching based networks and cultured a solid research track in mobile and computer networks, developing several closely-related research proposals, with special focus on mobile ad hoc network (MANET) related challenges such as data availability, scalable and secure routing, energy efficiency, QoS, etc. Afterward, he expanded his research interests to address challenges on Internet of Things (IOT), wireless sensor networks (WSN), the evolved wireless broadband networks such as wireless interoperability of microwave access (WiMAX) and long-term evolution (LTE), and cloud and fog computing environment. In these areas, he is interested in developing theoretical frameworks as well as prototypical implementations related to data and service availability, quality of service, power saving, security, network planning, management and allocation of resources, data caching, service discovery, localization, routing and clustering, mobility management, etc.
