Dr Shabbir is interested to develop a better approach to the management of barnyard grass, one of the most problematic weeds in summer cropping systems. He is exploring the value of using crop competition to improve the management of this weed. In future studies he is interested to explore the potential of short-term cover crops to control barnyard grass as well as other summer weeds.
Dr Shabbir's other research interests include ecology and evolution of invasive weeds especially in the context of biological control. For an effective management of weeds it is important to understand the rapid evolutionary changesin different traits ofinvasive weeds. Dr Shabbir is alsokeen to study how plant competition and other control stretegies be combined to acheive better management of problematic weeds.
