My primary research interest involves the relationship of El Nino to California weather and climate. El Nino and other recurring climate patterns like PDO and MJO can have a profound influence on the state, its people and economy. My works seeks to understand these relationships and effectively communicate them not only to the academic community but also to the media and public. I also continue to research the issue of vehicular temperatures and the incidence of child fatalities due to hyperthermia
