Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) is a major human pathogen that infects over 70% of adult population worldwide. It infects mucous membrane at body surface and then establishes lifelong latent infection in nervous system. The sporadic herpes reactivation causes painful lesion and goes away normally, but it can become disastrous in immunocompromised individuals. The mechanism of how HSV evade host surveillance to maintain latency and to reactivate from latency remains largely unclear
