  • Dr. Washburn was trained in biological (physical) anthropology with an emphasis in human paleontology and paleoprimatology. His research interests have focused on the functional morphology of the sexually dimorphic canine/premolar honing complex in anthropoid primates and early hominids and the subsequent loss of this dental complex in the human lineage. This work has led him in other directions, several of which involve the human dentition. He is interested in bringing the anthropologist’s diagnosis of oral pathology in ancient bone and teeth more in line with current standards observed in clinical dentistry. He has been involved with many bioarchaeology projects that have conducted the excavation, analysis, and eventual reburial of human remains from cemeteries that required relocation due to federal or state funded highway or building projects. He is a forensic consultant with the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office and with medical examiners and coroners in surrounding counties
