My main research interests are in combinatorics and probability. One of my favorite topics is the combinatorics of maps (graphs embedded in surfaces). Maps actually appear in a wide variety of contexts: statistical mechanics on random lattices, random matrices, random surfaces, representation theory of the symmetric group, graph theory, algorithms for drawing graphs, encoding of meshes. Bijections between maps and certain decorated plane trees are at the core of recent advances in these domains
