Gharakhani’s research interests are in meshless and high-order discretization of PDEs and ODEs; algorithms for distributed- and shared-memory parallelization on clusters of modern multicore CPUs and multi-GPUs; fast multipole and multigrid solvers; Large Eddy Simulation modeling of turbulent flow; and CFD methodology development for unsteady vortex dominated and multiphase flows. His primary research focus at present is on Lagrangian Vortex Methods, Boundary Element Methods, and spectral discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations in their vortictiy transport formalization.
