is seeking a communications coordinator. A talented writer who can help Prof. Heffernan pitch OpEd pieces in national publications, produce articles for our public-facing blog. The work will eventually scale into communicating with foundations and ultimately the support of grant writing to organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education. A Bachelor's Degree or higher is needed. No previous experience is necessary.

Responsibilities:

Professor Neil Heffernan who runs the ASSISTments project (http://www.assistments.org) is seeking a communications coordinator. A talented writer who can help Prof. Heffernan pitch OpEd pieces in national publications, produce articles for our public-facing blog. The work will eventually scale into communicating with foundations and ultimately the support of grant writing to organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education.
Anyone who applies to this position must want to write quickly and easily create large amounts of text that can explain some of the complicated topics that Heffernan is working on. Prof. Heffernan works in artificial intelligence and deep learning; the communications coordinator will not be writing academic papers, and need to be expert in such topics, but they instead need to explain the work in layperson terms. The communications coordinator does not need to understand, in any depth, what deep-learning is, but should be able to learn how to explain how Heffernans use of deep-learning will help him solve problems that are faced by students and teachers.

Qualifications:

Looking for a full-time person who can grow into this role as they will need to be around as Prof. Heffernan writes new grants and this person can pitch some new ideas to media foundations and grant-making authorities.
Dr. Heffernan submits approximately 12 grants per year. His entire project has been funded with 36 grants bringing in a total of over $30 million. This communications role will help promote the work that we have done in the past as well as pitch new ideas. This is a great opportunity to build a writing portfolio since there is so much to write about and there are many venues for the ASSISTments story. Take a look at the http://www.assistments.org to understand the project that Heffernan has been running for 15 years. Its used by 1,000 teachers across the US. Find out how you apply your writing skills to get national attention and to have helped WPI and ASSISTments win new funding. You get to interact with Dr Heffernan in a daily capacity to exercise your writing skills.
Prof. Heffernan is looking for the right person; could be full or part time. Salary is commensurate with experience.
