A Research Fellow position is currently available in the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS).
The Climate Transformation Programme (CTP) aims to develop, inspire and accelerate knowledge-based solutions and educate future leaders to establish the stable climate and environment necessary for resilient, just, and sustainable Southeast Asian societies.
CTP will generate knowledge and innovation across disciplines including climate and Earth science, ecology, materials science, artificial intelligence, humanities, social sciences and the arts, finance, health, and engineering. It will also translate state-of-the-art scientific results into real world solutions for Singapore, and it will transfer these solutions to Southeast Asia (SEA) and beyond.
As part of this programme, Cluster 3 Climate Mitigation, will assess the permanence and quantification of nature-based solutions for climate mitigation. More information on CTP can be found here.
The Research Fellow will be based in Asian School of the Environment and will work collaboratively within a team and across clusters in CTP to develop research outputs and construct a model for carbon loss under various climate-induced threats. This is a three-year position. One of the threats associated with nature-based solutions and which affect the durability of these solutions, is wildfires. With the onset of climate change and anthropogenic degradation of ecosystems, fires are happening more frequently in tropical forests, especially over peatlands. The research fellow will apply theories and models from a disaster risk science and develop or improve on methodologies that have been used to quantify carbon loss from an ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities:

Conduct independent research and produce research outputs published in international peer-reviewed journals

Contribute to achieving deliverables in the project that includes developing a web-based platform for data visualization

Supervise and mentor, when needed, research team that includes research assistant, PhD students and undergraduates

Contribute to progress reports, project management and administration when needed
Job Requirements:

PhD in the following disciplines Disaster Risk Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, Geography, Computational Science

Skilled in data collection, analysis and interpretation

Familiar with R, QGIS for data processing, analysis and visualization

Good written and oral communication skills and produce research papers independently

Preferably with experience with probabilistic wildfire hazard modelling
