Departmental Overview
Launched in 2022 the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center for Data Science and Environment (DSE) at Berkeley is a partnership between UC Berkeley's Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR) and the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), with the financial support of Eric and Wendy Schmidt. The Center combines the power of computing and environmental science with open science principles and a commitment to inclusivity - all towards the purpose of building tangible, replicable, and accessible solutions to problems compromising the health of our environment. Team members in the Center co-create these solutions in direct partnership with those who hold the knowledge and expertise of their local needs and environmental context.
At DSE, we aim to contribute to the global community who are similarly working to take on these challenges in four key areas:
- Generating ground-breaking computational/data science discoveries motivated by pressing environmental questions;
- Producing scalable, last-mile solutions to critical threats facing the environment, powered by open-source tools;
- Deploying these solutions widely, taking advantage of modern cloud infrastructure and open data/open software, and maintaining a design philosophy of vendor neutrality and interoperability to ensure that community needs are prioritized;
- Creating an enhanced pipeline of young environmental leaders connected to local communities and organizations to meet their needs and translate our research findings and technological developments into practical impacts.
The Data Analyst will play a critical role to support our collaboration with the National Park Service to analyze vegetation monitoring data in order to better understand the climate vulnerability of ecosystems.

Responsibilities
- Gathers, analyzes, prepares and summarizes the collection of information and data; recommends statistical approaches, trends, sources and uses. Integrating innovative quantitative vegetation ecology methods with the development of compelling visualizations and open source software tools. Analyze vegetation monitoring data.
- Plans long-term statistical studies, including the preparation of proposals, design of survey instruments and determining sampling procedures. Bringing modern data science infrastructure to existing models and methodologies from literature.
- Prepares data for presentation. Coauthoring reports with NPS authors by contributing summary of analytical results which will be integrated into larger NPS publications.
- Prepares reports of studies for internal validation and cross validation studies. Contributing code and documentation to a shared resource library.
- Fostering collaboration among networks and partners by sharing results of work underway and actively engaging in planning for upcoming projects.
- Participating in a community of practice (including NPS staff and other partners using I&M data) exchanging ideas on analytical approaches
- Participating periodically in trainings, workshops, or other activities to advance NPS and other partner ecologists' awareness of contemporary analytical approaches.
- Oversees data entry, database management and research analysis of students/lower- level support staff.
Required Qualifications
- Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and data science.
- Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing to both technical and nontechnical audiences.

- Experience building client-side tools with JavaScript and/or TypeScript
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with data science approaches like machine learning
- Proven track record of work on Github or similar software platform
- Experience with the modern scientific Python stack
Salary & Benefits
This is full-time, two year contract position. Extension may be possible with continued funding.
This position is eligible for hybrid/remote work within the United States. Exact arrangements are determined in partnership with the hiring manager to meet role responsibilities and department needs and are subject to change.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $88,900 - $99,996 annually.
