Position description

The Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Researcher position. The candidate will be expected to conduct independent research in thermosphere-ionosphere-magnetosphere interactions, focusing on ion-neutral coupling, electrodynamics, and the response of the ionosphere-thermosphere (I-T) system to extreme events.

This role will involve

(1) first-principles kinetic and chemical modeling of the I-T system,
(2) analysis of data from ground- and space-based sources such as spectrographs, all-sky imagers, and missions such as the Ionospheric Connection Explorer and Swarm, and
(3) interpretation of data in the context of global numerical models such as WACCM-X.

The position involves active participation in national and international collaborations, presentation of research findings at scientific conferences, and publication of results in leading peer-reviewed journals. As an independent researcher, the successful applicant will actively participate in and occasionally lead efforts to develop and fund new projects. Contributions to outreach, mentoring, and educational efforts are also highly valued.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
A PhD or equivalent international degree.

Preferred qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate successfully in national and international collaborations.
  • Proven track record of writing successful extramural grants
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research
  • Experience with kinetic and photochemical modeling of space plasma processes
  • Strong background in thermosphere-ionosphere interactions
  • Proven excellence in scientific communication, outreach, education, and mentoring
  • Proficiency in scientific computing and data analysis using Python
