Position description

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior/Assistant Specialist in the Nunez Lab, in the area of genetics, genomics, cell culture, and genome editing.

The Nunez lab studies the molecular biology of epigenetics in human cells and developing new technologies to change epigenetic modifications for use in basic research. The lab uses CRISPR to modify epigenetics at any site of the human genome, taking advantage of cell culture models to quantitatively measure the direct impact of epigenetics on gene expression. The lab specializes in CRISPR, functional genomics, CRISPR screens, epigenome editing, genome editing, genomics, and cell-based reporter models.

The Junior/Assistant Specialist will provide a variety of research functions and specialized support within the Nunez lab.

Primary responsibilities include:

-Culturing a variety of mammalian cell lines, including cancer cell lines, induced pluripotent stem cells, and iPSC-derived neurons. The candidate will passage cells routinely by counting and plating into tissue culture dishes using sterile technique.
This includes routine counting and passaging of cell lines such as HEK293T, K562, and stem cells. The candidate will perform CRISPR experiments, starting from introducing CRISPR molecules into cells, then genotyping/phenotyping to assess the gene or epigenome editing efficacy.
-Transfection and transduction of vectors to generate cell lines for CRISPR-based experiments. The candidate will routinely generate lentiviral particles from HEK293T cells for future transduction into cell lines.
-Genotyping and molecular analysis of gene editing and epigenome editing experiments. The candidate will isolate genomic DNA or chromatin from CRISPR-treated cells and perform PCR and/or chromatin immunoprecipitation.
-In addition, the candidate will assist with duties such as ordering and restocking supplies, autoclaving waste, and coordinating repair of broken equipment with vendors.
-Managing protocols and ensuring lab safety and protocol compliance.
-Preparing written reports on research progress, including assisting the PI and lab members in writing methods and protocols used in experiments that are included in manuscripts.

This position provides full benefits.
