Position description

The QB3 Institute at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant/Associate Project Scientist in the Keasling Lab, in Bioengineering and yeast product discovery.

This position will be in the Jay Keasling Laboratory in the QB3 Institute, at UC Berkeley. The Keasling Laboratory focuses on engineering microorganisms to produce valuable chemicals from inexpensive, renewable resources.

The position will participate in a particular project funded by the National Institutes of Health which involves the production of vaccine adjuvants. In this project, the research group will engineer yeast to produce two natural vaccine adjuvants, QS-21 and QS-7, as well as produce new-to-nature molecules that could be excellent vaccine adjuvants. The group will supply these molecules to collaborators who will test them.

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • undertaking research to engineer yeast to produce vaccine adjuvant candidates which will involve expressing genes from a variety of plants in yeast
  • organizing and executing experiments
  • organizing and analyzing data
  • writing research papers describing the research and the results
  • working with the PI to write proposals
  • interacting with collaborators on the project and aiding the PI in managing the project
  • writing reports to funding agencies for further funding
  • guiding the research of undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral fellows working on the same project


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • PhD (or equivalent international degree)

Preferred qualifications

  • Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry, biochemical engineering, or equivalent.
  • 4 years of experience in academic research
  • The researcher should have experience engineering yeast to produce natural products, particularly terpenoids.
  • The researcher should have excellent knowledge of growing and cultivating yeast and analytical techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience in engineering yeast to produce natural products, particularly terpenoids.
  • Demonstrated experience of growing and cultivating yeast and analytical techniques.
