Metal nanoparticles are known to display unique physical and chemical properties not found in bulk metal nor single ions. As methods towards the preparation and manufacture of nanoparticles have advanced in the last few decades, metal nanoparticles have found a role in a range of applications that have made them prevalent in our environment. Yet the extent to which metal nanoparticles interact with living systems is still mostly unknown.
