My research interests are in the areas of photooxygenation, quantitative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (q-NMR), and perfume chemistry. In the area of photooxygenation, our lab is interested in finding non-disulfide cross-linkages in proteins to understand mechanisms of cataracts formation. We photooxygenate peptide-resembling amino acids derivatives to study these mechanisms. In the q-NMR area, we establish methods to quantitatively analyze various pharmaceutical drugs, including analgesic, anti-histamine, and anti-diabetic drugs. These methods are viable alternate methods for the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) methods commonly employed in the pharmaceutical industry. In the area of perfume chemistry, we work on qualitative and quantitative analysis of various essential oils and perfumes by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and q-NMR. My research students include both undergraduate and graduate students.
